Home Head Lice Remedies – Getting Rid of Head Lice and Nits At Home

home head lice remedies

According to Mayoclinic Head Lice Information,

Your doctor will likely recommend an over-the-counter (OTC) medication that kills lice and some of the eggs but these medications do not kill recently laid eggs. If you prefer not to use a medication for treating a head lice infestation, you may consider some alternative home treatments. (Source: Mayoclinic)

Getting head lice can be a very traumatizing experience, but it doesn’t have to be. Know that the solution doesn’t involve throwing out your belongings and going bald. Treating lice can be an expensive process, but doesn’t have to be, if you choose to do the treatment on your own. Here’s how you can go about doing so:

Verify Your Symptoms and Identifying Head Lice

Before rushing to go about treating anything, it’s best to make sure that what you are seeing or feeling is actually head lice. Make sure you know the difference between nits and dandruff. But the easiest way to differentiate the two is that dandruff moves when touched, where nits are firmly attached and cannot be easily removed.

Head lice are around 3mm long. Nits (lice eggs), less than a millimeter long, are a yellowish-brown, or clear if the eggs are empty. Nits are attached to the side of the hair strand and appear as little teardrops. Head lice may cause intense itching and cause a rash at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Note that some may not experience any of these symptoms. Head lice are spread from head-to-head contact, so if you have any of these symptoms and have made hair contact with a friend who has lice, odds are, you may have them.

Get Supplies

If you come to the conclusion that you do have head lice, you’re going to have to purchase tools to help you in getting rid of the lice. To properly treat head lice, you must purchase a Nit Terminator Comb, and conditioner. You can purchase a nit comb online or go to a local pharmacy. Make sure you get a good quality comb. Any hair conditioner will work.

Treat the Lice

The first step is to spread the conditioner into the hair. Then, separate the hair into even sections. Now, use your Nit Terminator Comb to comb the lice and nits out of the hair. When doing this, comb from root to tip, and do so from every angle, as nits can be attached from any angle. Repeat this process every few days for two weeks to ensure that all of the head lice and nits have been gotten rid of.

What to Avoid When Treating Lice at Home

When treating lice on your own, there are many mistakes that beginners make and improper techniques that are used. DO NOT:

  • Vacuum the lice/nits out of the hair
  • Drench the hair in gasoline
  • Put insecticides into the hair
  • Treat the lice with mayonnaise
